A French meteorite with an exceptional destiny

This Saint-Aubin meteorite, presented here by the slice, comes from the largest meteorite fall site ever discovered in France. It reached the Earth some 55,000 years ago, long before Homo sapiens arrived in Europe.
Its discovery is particularly remarkable, and retraces a veritable open-air scientific investigation.

A story worthy of a novel

A first fragment was unearthed in 1968 by a farmer in the Aube department. He kept the metal stone without knowing its origin.
It wasn’t until 2018 that research organized by Pierre Antonin revealed the extent of the phenomenon:

• fall zone mapping,

• prospecting over several campaigns,

• discovery of 123 impact points,

• total estimate of around 6 tonnes of extraterrestrial material.

This discovery makes Saint-Aubin the largest French meteorite known to date, well ahead of the Mont Dieu meteorite (435 kg).

An authentic metallic meteorite slice

This Saint-Aubin slice shows the internal structure of an iron meteorite. You can often make out :

• characteristic crystal patterns,

• a dense, metallic texture,

• a large mass in relation to its volume.

Each slice has its own unique pattern, the result of the slow cooling of extraterrestrial matter in space.

In the field of lithotherapy, this type of metallic meteorite is sometimes associated with inner strength and the story of origins. Some enthusiasts see it as a stone of perseverance and earthly memory.
These interpretations are not scientifically validated, but they add a symbolic dimension to this meteorite from France.
