The planet Mars, our fascinating celestial neighbor, has a history full of amazing scientific discoveries and truly amusing anecdotes. Over the years, this planet has provided scientists with plenty to fuel their curiosity, while also making us smile. Here are a few funny anecdotes from the history of Mars.

The (re)discovery of Mars

Funnily enough, Mars has been “rediscovered” several times. While the ancient Egyptians had already identified it thousands of years ago, astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus is often credited with its modern “discovery”, as it was he who correctly placed Mars in our solar system with his heliocentric theory in the 16th century. Subsequently, each new generation of astronomers has rediscovered Mars in a different light thanks to evolving technology. One day, you may be able to “rediscover” Mars yourself with your very own Martian meteorite!

The puzzle of Mars’ “canals

In the 19th century, Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli observed lines on Mars that he called “canali”, or canals in Italian. Some interpreted these as irrigation canals built by an advanced Martian civilization. However, this turned out to be a false alarm. These “canals” were simply optical illusions created by the telescopes of the time. An anecdote that proves that even the best scientists can have a vivid imagination!

The day Mars turned blue

In a cosmic sleight of hand, Mars, the Red Planet, has turned blue, at least for a day. In 2014, NASA’s Curiosity rover captured an image of a Martian sunset that was blue. On Mars, sunsets are blue because of the way the dust in the Martian atmosphere diffuses light. A phenomenon that made more than one scientist smile.

The hunt for “little green men

During the first mission to Mars, Mariner 4, in 1965, some people sincerely hoped that “little green men” would be found. Although this mission sent back valuable data, it found no signs of life, let alone little green men. That didn’t stop speculation and laughter from alien enthusiasts.

Every piece of Martian meteorite we sell is a piece of these fascinating and sometimes hilarious stories. Owning one brings you one step closer to the mysteries and smiles that Mars has to offer.
