Opal is a form of silica containing ordered micro-spheres: their arrangement splits light into colours. In Ethiopian (Welo) opal, this effect is especially vivid, even on a stone left raw.

Caring for Welo opal

Ethiopian opal is a hydrophane opal: it can absorb water and temporarily turn milky. Take your jewel off before showering, swimming or sport, keep perfume and creams away from the stone, and clean it with a soft dry cloth. Stored in its box, it will keep its colours for years.
