A sliced fragment of the famous Aletai iron meteorite, found in the Altai mountains (China), whose surface reveals the Widmanstätten pattern.
Aletai meteorite. Found in the Altai region of north-western China, Aletai is one of the iron meteorites most prized by collectors. Its slices show a network of criss-crossing bands, the Widmanstätten pattern: iron-nickel crystals that only form when cooling by a few degrees per million years, deep inside an asteroid. No terrestrial process can reproduce them.
Each fragment is cut from the main mass and presented in a black velvet box that brings out its metallic sheen.
