This framed solar eclipse photo brings together three genuine fragments under the glass: Campo del Cielo, NWA 14093 and Libyan desert glass. The black frame and its white mount give the piece a gallery-style finish, with the fragments set in a white disc on the photo. It is therefore a one-of-a-kind piece, both decorative and scientific.
The photo breaks a solar eclipse down step by step: the Moon nibbles at the solar disc until totality, when only the corona remains visible, before the Sun reappears. To go further, our page on the Moon also tells you more.
Thus, three fragments share the same disc. Campo del Cielo is an iron meteorite that fell about 4,000 years ago in northern Argentina. NWA 14093 is a mesosiderite from Morocco, half metal and half rock. Libyan desert glass, however, is not a meteorite: it is impact glass about 29 million years old.
